PERSONALITY OVERVIEW
Steve is one of millions of young men who happened to get caught up in a war without pity or logic. Inaction is something that Steve had to actively fight against, both from a nationalist standpoint and his own, when he didn’t see the fight as something he needed to participate in. He opted for neutrality, but deep down, Steve is a realist who believes that justice has to be done and that it doesn’t matter what orders he receives, what matters is that he’s doing the right thing for the most people. He knows that his life, in the grand scheme of things, isn’t as important as the lives of millions of others. He’s a good soldier, who once believed that he could make a personal difference. Until his final dying act, that hadn’t been true, but it’s the promise he always kept in his heart – he could make a difference, if he just fought hard enough.
While he’s not without kindness, the war has done a good job of sanding away at his emotions and left only the parts of him that serve as being a soldier and a spy. He can be something of a cynic, even when evidence is presented right in front of his nose, but with a small bit of time, Steve is willing to keep an open-mind and come around if given enough evidence and a compelling argument. He won’t believe on faith alone. He’s extremely protective and has a high degree of self-worth. The people he chooses to align himself with aren’t necessarily the pinnacles of their fields, and hardly revered publicly and famously, but Steve works hard to earn their trust and loyalty.
Steve is extremely courageous, not in the fact that he’s willing to meet risks head on without a thought, but rather that he knows the dangers and can work himself up to face them once he’s weighed the risk of whether it’s worth the fight. He picks his battles carefully, an intelligent man who can look at the fight in No Man’s Land and know there’s no chance of success, but who will look at that same land when the battle landscape changes and know it’s worth taking. He’s tactically driven and always learning new tricks and skills that he’ll employ, aware that he’s not in possession of all information at all times. He’s skilled in subterfuge and lying, but only does this in a professional capacity and tries, when he can, to be honest in a personal one.
While the war has worn away his hope, meeting Diana helped to give him some of that back, along with a reminder that he can love. Steve often compartmentalizes out of necessity, to avoid being broken down, but meeting Diana allows those feelings he’s pushed down to come to the forefront.
PERSONALITY QUESTIONS
What skills does your character bring to the situation?:
As a soldier and spy, Steve excels at many of the things that make someone capable of serving as a cog in the war. To be a spy, he’s of above-average intelligence and physical standing. He’s been through hell and back and has the stubborn persistence and realism to approach a situation practically, as if it were a mission. His talent at compartmentalizing will mean that when emergency situations arise, he’ll be ready to cope with them and ensure that he’s putting the most important things first. Steve’s well-versed in subterfuge, has been trained in many fighting forms, and has learned how to use a variety of weapons. He’s a quick study, which will help him as he starts to move towards learning more about surviving rather than fighting.
Steve’s a contributor and used to being one part of a larger picture. It means that he’ll be willing to serve his purpose and work in whatever capacity is needed, whether it’s fighting or as simple as learning to take things a little slower and making sure that people aren’t starving. He’s very occupied with the greater good, which is one of his key skills
Explain how your character would react to the following:
- Discovering that their memories may have been tampered with:
Being a spy, memories and information is gold to Steve, but more than that are the memories he holds dear as shining beacons through all the gray and sorrow. What Steve will struggle with is wondering whether those memories have been touched. The trenches, the shells, the pain, and the dying? Steve’s more than willing to give up those memories, even if it makes him something of a weak man to not be able to endure them all the time, every day
- Having to do physical labor to survive:
Steve’s been a participant in a war that’s taxing and works you until you’re to the bone, then expects you to keep going. Physical labour to survive will be nothing new to him and he’ll power through it with determination that it will bring about a positive end as a result. He’s been fighting a war that expects you to work to survive, this will just be more of the status quo
- Having to share resources with others:
While Steve will aim to make sure that he’s able to keep going, he will never let anyone go without resources. He’ll prioritize only slightly if it comes down to making sure that he’s still capable to go out and hunt and gather for others, but he will make sure that the resources that he does have will get the most use with the most people. He’s not inherently selfish, but he will be practical in the order in which these resources are shared.
- Being unable to leave the area:
As Steve believes that he’s already dead, he’ll be coming in with the expectation that he won’t be able to leave and go anywhere. Having a second chance will be a relief to him that he will still be processing, but that means that being unable to leave the area will be a secondary concern to him. Once he talks to others and learns that the war is over, he’ll be able to relax slightly and let himself enjoy a second chance at life (and with Diana).
- Doing without modern conveniences and technology and/or being around tech more advanced than they're used to:
Given that the village will be very much like the era that Steve grew up in (minus about 20 years), this will not be as much of a shock for him. Technology was still limited and he’ll miss certain elements like telegrams and planes, but at the same time, learning how to cook and heat a home in this environment won’t necessarily be too much of a leap for him
- Being separated, possibly permanently, from loved ones and their previous life, including loss of powers, if applicable:
Steve’s already given up on seeing his family again, having closed that door when he left for the war. Hauling around connections and affections means assuming that you’re going to go home and Steve gave up on that early on, when he saw the extent of the damage. He’ll miss his friends and allies, but to him, they were also soldiers first and that meant knowing that you might not survive to see each other past the battle. That said, if Diana is in the village, that leads to a path for Steve that he never truly considered beyond fantasies and imagination. He still wouldn’t know what to do in order to give a woman like her the world, but he’d be grateful for the chance to try.
